Valuable varieties & errors

1892-O Micro O

extreme

$1,500 – $25,000+

A New Orleans employee punched the mint mark with a tiny 'O' punch intended for a quarter eagle gold coin, not a half dollar. Only a handful of coins were struck before the mistake was caught, making this one of the rarest Barber varieties.

How to check: Flip the coin over and find the O mint mark below the eagle. On a normal 1892-O the O is large and obvious; on the Micro O it looks clearly undersized, about half the normal height. Compare against photos of a regular 1892-O — the difference is dramatic, not subtle.

Error types found on this series

Repunched Mint Mark (RPM)

The mint mark was punched into the die more than once, slightly off position, leaving a doubled letter.

Die Crack

A crack in the die fills with metal during the strike, leaving a thin raised line on the coin.

Lamination Error

A thin layer of the coin's metal peels, flakes, or cracks off because the alloy was poorly mixed.

Off-Center Strike

The blank wasn't centered when struck, so part of the design is missing and part of the coin is blank.
