Doubled Die (Obverse)

What it is

A doubled die obverse happens before any coin is struck, when the die (the steel stamp that presses the design into coins) is being made. The design used to be pressed into the die in multiple steps, and if the die shifted slightly between steps, it ended up with two overlapping versions of the design. Every coin struck by that die then shows the same doubling in the same spot. That's why doubled dies are so collectible: they're a true variety, not a one-off accident, and the doubling looks identical from coin to coin.

How to spot it

Use a 5x-10x loupe on the lettering and date on the front of the coin. Look for a clear second outline that is raised and rounded, like two complete letters stacked slightly apart, with notching (little split points) at the corners of letters. On famous doubled dies like the 1955 cent, the doubling in LIBERTY and the date is visible without magnification. Check the same spots collectors know for that date, because a real doubled die always doubles the same areas. If the second image looks flat, shelf-like, or shiny instead of fully rounded, it's probably machine doubling, not a doubled die.

What it's worth

This is one of the few errors that can be genuinely life-changing: a 1955 doubled die cent runs roughly $1,000-$2,500+ even worn, and a 1969-S can bring $25,000-$70,000+. But most minor doubled dies add only a few dollars to maybe $50-$100, so the specific date and variety matter enormously.
